Mission Statement
The mission of BeesKneesVintage.com is to recreate a virtual classic department store that provides some of the most beautiful and unique antique dresses in the world, along with other antique and vintage clothing and accessories. There's a particular focus on wearable flapper dresses, couture gowns (especially bridal, but there's also a wide variety of other items that may be desirable to collectors, theatres, and anyone attending period events such as historic reenactments, theme parties, etc. The goal is to remain upscale, while still providing attire in many price ranges.
Wearing antique clothing to any event is risky because normal activities, such as getting in and out of a car, sitting, dancing, or eating and drinking can all end up ruining your outfit. If you want to wear anything antique, which is the best part of having beautiful antique clothing in my opinion, try to remember these items are fragile and, in many cases, pieces of art. If you ruin something you loved, try to focus on how great you looked and how much fun you had. These are material possessions and, even if they can't be replaced, it is not the end of the world if something happens to them.
Gift Wrap
We provide gift wrap service for an additional $5.00 per item. We use high quality, all occasion gift wrapping and decorations.
Any message provided with the order will be enclosed with the package for no additional charge, whether or not gift wrapping is ordered.
Sizes
All garment measurements are of the garment itself, not the body that might wear it. If you intend to wear something of a historic nature, please be sure to measure yourself and add plenty of room to your measurements for movement. In the unlikely event a piece is sized, the sizes are no longer accurate today so you must go by the measurements.
All measurements are approximate. Clothing measurements might be to the nearest 1/4-1/2 inch, and are taken laying the item flat (without stretching). Also consider the style of your item. For example, flapper dresses should hang straight and loose, so to look appropriate you'll need extra room.
Items with odd shapes, such as purses, can be particularly hard to measure. Feel free to ask questions at any time if you'd like further details.
Pricing
Prices of antique dresses and other items on this site are generally based on acquisition cost. For example, there could be two identical items and one could cost less than the other because I acquired it for less. Other factors affecting price are sentimental value and restoration expense. The dress my grandmother wore to my mother's wedding may be overpriced, particularly because it didn't cost me anything, but if no one buys it I'm content passing it to one of my daughters some day - neither of whom currently have the slightest interest in it - but I don't mind keeping it in the meantime!
When I have time to restore items, I use the finest silk tulle and other fabrics I can find in New York, or order silk embroidery floss, and am very meticulous about embroidering, so those expense are added to my purchase expense.
There are a wide range of prices on the site, and hopefully they are all fair and allow for something special in many budgets.
Returns
Since these items are of a historic nature, I do not take returns, but do make an effort to completely describe and photograph items including any flaws. I also try to remain objective in my descriptions, and do not carry on about how flawless or "museum quality" a piece is (even if it came from a museum), except to state its description and any particular points of interest.
If you feel an item has been inaccurately described, please contact me and return the item within three days, unused/unworn and in the exact condition it was when it was purchased. I will refund the purchase price of the item (not shipping).
I hope everyone enjoys browsing this antique department store and I want everyone to have a positive experience shopping be very happy with all purchases.
Shipping
I do not believe in charging for shipping by the cost of an item, since an expensive item may be very light and inexpensive to mail. I also think it's very rude for sellers (particularly evident on ebay) to try to make a killing on shipping costs. Therefore I individually weigh each item and the shipping fees are based on the weight of your order. I usually ship USPS with insurance and/or delivery confirmation. Large items, like skirt hoops will ship by USPS Ground.
International Sales
I will ship purchases outside the United States, but will not take requests to fudge customs forms. All international buyers must pay by Paypal. All payments must clear before shipping can be completed. International credit cards take longer to clear. If you do not pay for insurance or a mail service that includes tracking, then we cannot be responsible for what happens to your package after it leaves here.
